The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 14

1

And the LORD spake17 unto Moses, saying,2

2

Speak16 unto the children of Israel, that they turn4 and encamp4 before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp4 by the sea.

3

For Pharaoh will say1 of the children of Israel, They [are] entangled12 in the land, the wilderness hath shut1 them in.

4

And I will harden14 Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow1 after them; and I will be honoured11 upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know1 that I [am] the LORD. And they did4 so.

5

And it was told93 the king of Egypt that the people fled:1 and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned11 against the people, and they said,4 Why have we done1 this, that we have let Israel go14 from serving2 us?

6

And he made ready4 his chariot, and took1 his people with him:

7

And he took4 six hundred chosen7 chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.

8

And the LORD hardened17 the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued4 after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out6 with an high6 hand.

9

But the Egyptians pursued4 after them, all the horses [and] chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook55 them encamping6 by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.

10

And when Pharaoh drew nigh,52 the children of Israel lifted up4 their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched6 after them; and they were sore afraid:4 and the children of Israel cried out4 unto the LORD.

11

And they said4 unto Moses, Because [there were] no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away1 to die2 in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt1 thus with us, to carry us forth53 out of Egypt?

12

[Is] not this the word that we did tell14 thee in Egypt, saying,2 Let us alone,3 that we may serve4 the Egyptians? For [it had been] better for us to serve2 the Egyptians, than that we should die2 in the wilderness.

13

And Moses said4 unto the people, Fear4 ye not, stand still,100 and see3 the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew4 to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen1 to day, ye shall see2 them again55 no more for ever.

14

The LORD shall fight11 for you, and ye shall hold your peace.55

15

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Wherefore criest4 thou unto me? speak16 unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:4

16

But lift thou up54 thy rod, and stretch out3 thine hand over the sea, and divide3 it: and the children of Israel shall go4 on dry [ground] through the midst of the sea.

17

And I, behold, I will harden18 the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow4 310 them: and I will get me honour11 upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

18

And the Egyptians shall know1 that I [am] the LORD, when I have gotten me honour9 upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

19

And the angel of God, which went6 before the camp of Israel, removed4 and went4 behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went4 from before their face, and stood4 behind them:

20

And it came4 between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness [to them], but it gave light55 by night [to these]: so that the one came not near1 the other all the night.

21

And Moses stretched out4 his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go55 [back] by a strong east wind all that night, and made4 the sea dry [land], and the waters were divided.11

22

And the children of Israel went4 into the midst of the sea upon the dry [ground]: and the waters [were] a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

23

And the Egyptians pursued,4 and went in4 after them to the midst of the sea, [even] all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24

And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked55 unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled4 the host of the Egyptians,

25

And took off55 their chariot wheels, that they drave17 them heavily: so that the Egyptians said,4 Let us flee4 from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth12 for them against the Egyptians.

26

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Stretch out3 thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again4 upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

27

And Moses stretched forth4 his hand over the sea, and the sea returned4 to his strength when the morning appeared;2 and the Egyptians fled5 against2 it; and the LORD overthrew17 the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

28

And the waters returned,4 and covered17 the chariots, and the horsemen, [and] all the host of Pharaoh that came6 into the sea after them; there remained8 not so much as one of them.

29

But the children of Israel walked1 upon dry [land] in the midst of the sea; and the waters [were] a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

30

Thus the LORD saved55 Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw4 the Egyptians dead5 upon the sea shore.

31

And Israel saw4 that great work which the LORD did1 upon the Egyptians: and the people feared4 the LORD, and believed55 the LORD, and his servant Moses.
