The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 22

1

If a man shall steal4 an ox, or a sheep, and kill1 it, or sell1 it; he shall restore17 five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

2

If a thief be found11 breaking up, and be smitten90 that he die,1 [there shall] no blood [be shed] for him.

3

If the sun be risen1 upon him, [there shall be] blood [shed] for him; [for] he should make full15 restitution;17 if he have nothing, then he shall be sold8 for his theft.

4

If the theft be certainly9 found11 in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore17 double.

5

If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten,55 and shall put14 in his beast, and shall feed14 in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.17

6

If fire break out,4 and catch1 in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed8 [therewith]; he that kindled56 the fire shall surely15 make restitution.17

7

If a man shall deliver4 unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep,2 and it be stolen27 out of the man's house; if the thief be found,11 let him pay17 double.

8

If the thief be not found,11 then the master of the house shall be brought8 unto the judges, [to see] whether he have put1 his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

9

For all manner of trespass, [whether it be] for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, [or] for any manner of lost thing, which [another] challengeth4 to be his, the cause of both parties shall come4 before the judges; [and] whom the judges shall condemn,55 he shall pay17 double unto his neighbour.

10

If a man deliver4 unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep;2 and it die,1 or be hurt,8 or driven away,8 no man seeing6 [it]:

11

[Then] shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put1 his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept1 [thereof], and he shall not make [it] good.17

12

And if it be stolen2 1589 11 from him, he shall make restitution17 unto the owner thereof.

13

If it be2 torn in pieces,11 [then] let him bring55 it [for] witness, [and] he shall not make good17 that which was torn.

14

And if a man borrow4 [ought] of his neighbour, and it be hurt,8 or die,1 the owner thereof [being] not with it, he shall surely15 make [it] good.17

15

[But] if the owner thereof [be] with it, he shall not make [it] good:17 if it [be] an hired [thing], it came1 for his hire.

16

And if a man entice17 a maid that is not betrothed,27 and lie1 with her, he shall surely2 endow4 her to be his wife.

17

If her father utterly15 refuse17 to give2 her unto him, he shall pay4 money according to the dowry of virgins.

18

Thou shalt not suffer a witch18 to live.17

19

Whosoever lieth6 with a beast shall surely2 be put to death.93

20

He that sacrificeth6 unto [any] god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.93

21

Thou shalt neither vex55 a stranger, nor oppress4 him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

22

Ye shall not afflict17 any widow, or fatherless child.

23

If thou afflict17 them in any wise,15 and they cry4 at all2 unto me, I will surely2 hear4 their cry;

24

And my wrath shall wax hot,1 and I will kill1 you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

25

If thou lend55 money to [any of] my people [that is] poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer,6 neither shalt thou lay4 upon him usury.

26

If thou at all2 take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge,4 thou shalt deliver55 it unto him by that the sun goeth down:2

27

For that [is] his covering only, it [is] his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep?4 and it shall come to pass, when he crieth4 unto me, that I will hear;1 for I [am] gracious.

28

Thou shalt not revile17 the gods, nor curse4 the ruler of thy people.

29

Thou shalt not delay17 [to offer] the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give4 unto me.

30

Likewise shalt thou do4 with thine oxen, [and] with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give4 it me.

31

And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat4 [any] flesh [that is] torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast55 it to the dogs.
