Chapter 22

1

To the chief Musician18 upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken1 me? [why art thou so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my roaring?

2

O my God, I cry4 in the daytime, but thou hearest4 not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

3

But thou [art] holy, [O thou] that inhabitest6 the praises of Israel.

4

Our fathers trusted1 in thee: they trusted,1 and thou didst deliver17 them.

5

They cried1 unto thee, and were delivered:8 they trusted1 in thee, and were not confounded.1

6

But I [am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised7 of the people.

7

All they that see6 me laugh me to scorn:55 they shoot out55 the lip, they shake55 the head, [saying],

8

He trusted2 on the LORD [that] he would deliver17 him: let him deliver55 him, seeing he delighted1 in him.

9

But thou [art] he that took me out5 of the womb: thou didst make me hope56 [when I was] upon my mother's breasts.

10

I was cast90 upon thee from the womb: thou [art] my God from my mother's belly.

11

Be not far4 from me; for trouble [is] near; for [there is] none to help.6

12

Many bulls have compassed1 me: strong [bulls] of Bashan have beset me round.14

13

They gaped1 upon me [with] their mouths, [as] a ravening6 and a roaring6 lion.

14

I am poured out8 like water, and all my bones are out of joint:98 my heart is like wax; it is melted8 in the midst of my bowels.

15

My strength is dried up1 like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth94 to my jaws; and thou hast brought4 me into the dust of death.

16

For dogs have compassed1 me: the assembly of the wicked56 have inclosed52 me: they pierced1 738 my hands and my feet.

17

I may tell17 all my bones: they look55 [and] stare4 upon me.

18

They part17 my garments among them, and cast55 lots upon my vesture.

19

But be not thou far4 from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste3 thee to help me.

20

Deliver54 my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

21

Save54 me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard1 me from the horns of the unicorns.

22

I will declare17 thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise17 thee.

23

Ye that fear the LORD, praise16 him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify16 him; and fear3 him, all ye the seed of Israel.

24

For he hath not despised1 nor abhorred14 the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid52 his face from him; but when he cried15 unto him, he heard.1

25

My praise [shall be] of thee in the great congregation: I will pay17 my vows before them that fear him.

26

The meek shall eat4 and be satisfied:4 they shall praise17 the LORD that seek6 him: your heart shall live4 for ever.

27

All the ends of the world shall remember4 and turn4 unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship101 before thee.

28

For the kingdom [is] the LORD'S: and he [is] the governor6 among the nations.

29

All [they that be] fat upon earth shall eat1 and worship:101 all they that go down6 to the dust shall bow4 before him: and none can keep alive14 his own soul.

30

A seed shall serve4 him; it shall be accounted29 to the Lord for a generation.

31

They shall come,4 and shall declare55 his righteousness unto a people that shall be born,12 that he hath done1 [this].
