Chapter 69

1

To the chief Musician18 upon Shoshannim, [A Psalm] of David.
Save54 me, O God; for the waters are come in1 unto [my] soul.

2

I sink1 in deep mire, where [there is] no standing: I am come1 into deep waters, where the floods overflow1 me.

3

I am weary1 of my crying:2 my throat is dried:8 mine eyes fail1 while I wait18 for my God.

4

They that hate6 me without a cause are more1 than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy56 me, [being] mine enemies6 wrongfully, are mighty:1 then I restored55 [that] which I took not away.1

5

O God, thou knowest1 my foolishness; and my sins are not hid8 from thee.

6

Let not them that wait6 on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed4 for my sake: let not those that seek18 thee be confounded11 for my sake, O God of Israel.

7

Because for thy sake I have borne1 reproach; shame hath covered14 my face.

8

I am become a stranger94 unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

9

For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me1 up; and the reproaches of them that reproached6 thee are fallen1 upon me.

10

When I wept,4 [and chastened] my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

11

I made4 sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

12

They that sit in6 the gate speak4 against me; and I [was] the song of the drunkards.6 7941

13

But as for me, my prayer [is] unto thee, O LORD, [in] an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear3 me, in the truth of thy salvation.

14

Deliver54 me out of the mire, and let me not sink:4 let me be delivered11 from them that hate6 me, and out of the deep waters.

15

Let not the waterflood 7641 overflow4 me, neither let the deep swallow me up,4 and let not the pit shut4 her mouth upon me.

16

Hear3 me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness [is] good: turn3 unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

17

And hide55 not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble:1 hear3 me speedily.

18

Draw nigh3 unto my soul, [and] redeem3 it: deliver3 me because of mine enemies.6

19

Thou hast known1 my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries6 [are] all before thee.

20

Reproach hath broken1 my heart; and I am full of heaviness:4 and I looked17 [for some] to take pity,2 but [there was] none; and for comforters,18 but I found1 none.

21

They gave4 me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.55

22

Let their table become a snare before them: and [that which should have been] for [their] welfare, [let it become] a trap.

23

Let their eyes be darkened,4 that they see2 not; and make their loins continually to shake.54

24

Pour out3 thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold55 of them.

25

Let their habitation be desolate;12 [and] let none dwell6 in their tents.

26

For they persecute1 [him] whom thou hast smitten;52 and they talk17 to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

27

Add3 iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come4 into thy righteousness.

28

Let them be blotted out11 of the book of the living, and not be written11 with the righteous.

29

But I [am] poor and sorrowful:6 let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.17

30

I will praise17 the name of God with a song, and will magnify17 him with thanksgiving.

31

[This] also shall please4 the LORD better than an ox [or] bullock that hath horns56 and hoofs.56

32

The humble shall see1 [this, and] be glad:4 and your heart shall live4 that seek6 God.

33

For the LORD heareth6 the poor, and despiseth1 not his prisoners.

34

Let the heaven and earth praise17 him, the seas, and every thing that moveth6 therein.

35

For God will save55 Zion, and will build4 the cities of Judah: that they may dwell1 there, and have it in possession.1

36

The seed also of his servants shall inherit4 it: and they that love6 his name shall dwell4 therein.
