Chapter 89

Maschil ^{7919 56} of Ethan the Ezrahite.
I will sing⁴ of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known⁵⁵ thy faithfulness to all generations.

For I have said,¹ Mercy shall be built up¹¹ for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish⁵⁵ in the very heavens.

I have made¹ a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn⁸ unto David my servant,

Thy seed will I establish⁵⁵ for ever, and build up¹ thy throne to all generations. Selah.

And the heavens shall praise⁵⁵ thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

For who in the heaven can be compared⁴ unto the LORD? [who] among the sons of the mighty can be likened⁴ unto the LORD?

God is greatly to be feared¹² in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence¹² of all [them that are] about him.

O LORD God of hosts, who [is] a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

Thou rulest⁶ the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise,² thou stillest¹⁷ them.

Thou hast broken¹⁴ Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered¹⁴ thine enemies⁶ with thy strong arm.

The heavens [are] thine, the earth also [is] thine: [as for] the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded¹ them.

The north and the south thou hast created¹ them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice¹⁷ in thy name.

Thou hast a mighty arm: strong⁴ is thy hand, [and] high⁴ is thy right hand.

Justice and judgment [are] the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before¹⁷ thy face.

Blessed [is] the people that know⁶ the joyful sound: they shall walk,¹⁷ O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.

In thy name shall they rejoice⁴ all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.⁴

For thou [art] the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.^{4 7311 55}

For the LORD [is] our defence; and the Holy One of Israel [is] our king.

Then thou spakest¹⁴ in vision to thy holy one, and saidst,⁴ I have laid¹⁴ help upon [one that is] mighty; I have exalted⁵² [one] chosen⁷ out of the people.

I have found¹ David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed¹ him:

With whom my hand shall be established:¹¹ mine arm also shall strengthen¹⁷ him.

The enemy⁶ shall not exact⁵⁵ upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict¹⁷ him.

And I will beat down¹ his foes before his face, and plague⁴ them that hate¹⁸ him.

But my faithfulness and my mercy [shall be] with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.⁴

I will set¹ his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

He shall cry⁴ unto me, Thou [art] my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

Also I will make⁴ him [my] firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

My mercy will I keep⁴ for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast¹² with him.

His seed also will I make¹ [to endure] for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

If his children forsake⁴ my law, and walk⁴ not in my judgments;

If they break¹⁷ my statutes, and keep⁴ not my commandments;

Then will I visit¹ their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take⁵⁵ from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.¹⁷

My covenant will I not break,¹⁷ nor alter¹⁷ the thing that is gone out of my lips.

Once have I sworn⁸ by my holiness that I will not lie¹⁷ unto David.

His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

It shall be established¹¹ for ever as the moon, and [as] a faithful¹² witness in heaven. Selah.

But thou hast cast off¹ and abhorred,⁴ thou hast been wroth⁹⁸ with thine anointed.

Thou hast made void¹⁴ the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned¹⁴ his crown [by casting it] to the ground.

Thou hast broken down¹ all his hedges; thou hast brought¹ his strong holds to ruin.

All that pass by⁶ the way spoil¹ him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.

Thou hast set up⁵² the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies⁶ to rejoice.⁵²

Thou hast also turned⁵⁵ the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand⁵² in the battle.

Thou hast made his glory to cease,⁵² and cast his throne down¹⁴ to the ground.

The days of his youth hast thou shortened:⁵² thou hast covered⁵² him with shame. Selah.

How long, LORD? wilt thou hide¹¹ thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn⁴ like fire?

Remember³ how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made¹ all men ¹²⁰ in vain?

What man [is he that] liveth,⁴ and shall not see⁴ death? shall he deliver¹⁷ his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.

Lord, where [are] thy former lovingkindnesses, [which] thou swarest⁸ unto David in thy truth?

Remember,³ Lord, the reproach of thy servants; [how] I do bear² in my bosom [the reproach of] all the mighty people;

Wherewith thine enemies⁶ have reproached,¹⁴ O LORD; wherewith they have reproached¹⁴ the footsteps of thine anointed.

Blessed⁷ [be] the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen.
