The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 29

1

Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city [where] David dwelt!1 add3 ye year to year; let them kill4 sacrifices.

2

Yet I will distress52 Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel.

3

And I will camp1 against thee round about, and will lay siege1 against thee with a mount, and I will raise52 forts against thee.

4

And thou shalt be brought down,1 [and] shalt speak17 out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low11 out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper46 out of the dust.

5

Moreover the multitude of thy strangers5 shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones [shall be] as chaff that passeth away:6 yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

6

Thou shalt be visited11 of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring6 fire.

7

And the multitude of all the nations that fight6 against Ariel, even all that fight6 against her and her munition, and that distress56 her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.

8

It shall even be as when an hungry [man] dreameth,4 and, behold, he eateth;6 but he awaketh,52 and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth,4 and, behold, he drinketh;6 but he awaketh,52 and, behold, [he is] faint, and his soul hath appetite:6 so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight6 against mount Zion.

9

Stay117 yourselves, and wonder;3 cry ye out,117 and cry:3 they are drunken,1 but not with wine; they stagger,1 but not with strong drink.

10

For the LORD hath poured out1 upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed17 your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.14

11

And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed,7 which [men] deliver4 to one that is learned,6 5612 saying,2 Read3 this, I pray thee: and he saith,1 I cannot; 3201 4 for it [is] sealed:7

12

And the book is delivered8 to him that is not learned,1 5612 saying,2 Read3 this, I pray thee: and he saith,1 I am not learned.1 5612

13

Wherefore the Lord said,4 Forasmuch as this people draw near8 [me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour14 me, but have removed their heart far14 from me, and their fear toward me is taught30 by the precept of men:

14

Therefore, behold, I will proceed6 to do a marvellous work53 among this people, [even] a marvellous work53 and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise [men] shall perish,1 and the understanding of their prudent12 [men] shall be hid.101

15

Woe unto them that seek deep56 to hide53 their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say,4 Who seeth6 us? and who knoweth6 us?

16

Surely your turning of things upside down2 shall be esteemed11 as the potter's6 clay: for shall the work say4 of him that made6 it, He made1 me not? or shall the thing framed say1 of him that framed6 it, He had no understanding?52

17

[Is] it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned1 into a fruitful field, 3759 and the fruitful field 3759 shall be esteemed11 as a forest?

18

And in that day shall the deaf hear1 the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see4 out of obscurity, and out of darkness.

19

The meek also shall increase1 [their] joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice4 in the Holy One of Israel.

20

For the terrible one is brought to nought,1 and the scorner5 is consumed,1 and all that watch6 for iniquity are cut off:8

21

That make a man an offender56 for a word, and lay a snare4 for him that reproveth56 in the gate, and turn aside55 the just for a thing of nought.

22

Therefore thus saith1 the LORD, who redeemed1 Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed,4 neither shall his face now wax pale.4

23

But when he seeth2 his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify55 my name, and sanctify52 the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear55 the God of Israel.

24

They also that erred6 in spirit shall come1 to understanding, and they that murmured7 shall learn4 doctrine.
